The 5S methodology - originally developed in Japan - is a quality working environment, aiming to maintain it. The 5S so-called "Toyota's Manufacturing System" is an integral part of a larger part of Taichi Ohno and Shigeo Shingo, its methodology subsequently further developed by leading U.S. companies. Since then it has spread to more and more industries due to its success.
The Japanese names derive from the initial of 5 words:
- Seiri: Remove unnecessary items from the workplace
- Seiton: Supply the necessary things that should be readily available
- Seiso: The total cleaning of the workplace
- Seiso: The total cleaning of the workplace
- Seiketsu: The high level of workplace organization
- Shitsuke: The training of workers to become autonomous
